One of the smallest and oldest bird sanctuaries in the country, Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu was a favorite hunting ground for royalties back in 1700s. Vedanthangal’s wetlands attracts thousand species of birds along with several monkeys. Garganey teals, glossy ibis, grey heron, grey pelican, open-billed stork, painted stork, snake bird, spoonbill and spot bill duck are just few of the several species which are found here. Although the sanctuary is open throughout the year, the best time to visit it is from November to March, as it is the nesting season for most migratory birds.
21. KANHA NATIONAL PARK
If you were a big fan of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book” as a child, then a visit to Kanhna National Park is a must and will re-fresh your memories of the book. Perhaps, this might be one of the reasons why in 1983 the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip visited this park in Madhya Pradesh. The park is characterized by grassy meadows and open bamboo forests. The rare animal species found here are tigers, leopards, wild dogs, jackals and sloth bears. If you love reptiles, then the best time to visit the park is during rainy season when you catch them in action. Otherwise the best months for a visit are between October to February.
